Buying Guide

Finding the right gear to add to your fishing arsenal can be challenging. It is undeniable that the right nighttime fishing lights will massively improve your fishing experience.

So, what are some of the things you should consider when shopping for a fishing lamp?

Type of Bulbs

Types of bulbs do vary. Currently, we have LEDs, halogen bulbs, and high-pressure sodium bulbs. Each bulb type has its pros and cons. Below we take a look at each bulb type.

Most bowfishing lights are fitted with LED bulbs. Most anglers prefer LED lamps due to their ability to illuminate water. They are particularly best if you’re looking to light up murky waters, especially those with a warm-white color temperature.

  • Wide range of color temperatures.
  • Battery-powered.
  • LED lamps are quite expensive.

Halogen Lamps

Halogen bulbs are readily available, and you can get them from almost all walk-in electrical shops.

They emit super-bright light, capable of lighting up all types of waters. However, this comes at a cost as they consume a lot of energy. On the bright side, they are lightweight and easily portable.

  • Emit a super-bright and penetrative beam.
  • Lightweight and easily portable.
  • Consume too much power.

High-Pressure Sodium (HPS)

High-Pressure Sodium, otherwise known as HPS, are powered using flashlights and powerful generators. They are the best when it comes to lighting up murky waters, and because of their higher running costs compared to the others, they are best used for commercial purposes.

  • The bulbs are lightweight.
  • Excellent for illuminating sediment-filled waters.
  • It requires a lot of energy.
  • It is challenging to set up.

When it comes to bulbs, always go for LEDs. In as much as they could be expensive, especially for a small setup, LEDs emit super-bright colors at varying color temperatures -so, whether murky or clear waters you will be sorted-. Additionally, they will help you save quite a lot when it comes to power usage.

Brightness Levels of Your Bowfishing Light

The level of brightness is also an essential factor. Ideally, the brighter your bowfishing lamp, the deeper it will penetrate. Brightness is measured in lumens. Most manufacturers do provide this value, so make sure to check it our prior to making a purchase.

Power Source

The size of your boat will heavily determine which power source to go for. You don’t want to overload your boat with excess luggage which will put your life and that of others (if any) at risk.

LED lamps work on DC (Direct Current). So, you will need a couple of batteries, depending on your lamp’s wattage. If you have a small boat, then LED lights are the way to go.

As discussed before, halogen bulbs consume a lot of energy which will force you to carry along powerful generators. Additionally, they don’t have a long lifespan meaning you can’t go for long expeditions before they burn out.

High-Pressure Sodium

If you’re planning for a long fishing detour, HPS bulbs will come in handy. The main reason is that they provide quality brightness. However, you will require a bigger boat with adequate space for the generators.

Let’s look at voltages

Voltage Purpose
12V DC It’s an ideal power source if you have a small boat with few lamps.
24V DC Adding more lights means you will need extra juice. Upgrading to a 24V DC power setup will guarantee the best performance.
120V DC If you have a bigger boat or are planning to go for a long voyage, then you will need to shift up to a 120V DC power system. This may be complex to set up so its best you involve an expert.

Light Colors

Different lamps emit different types of bright colors. The rule of thumb is that you should consider the type of water you’re fishing in.

Here is our simple breakdown to guide you.

Type of Water Light color
Murky waters. Warm White LEDs.
Semi-clear waters. Cool White LEDs.
Very dark waters. Yellow lights. Preferably from a High-Pressure Sodium bulb.

IP Rating

The IP rating revolves around how water and dust proof the lamp is. Most bowfishing lights have an IP rating of 65-67, meaning they can be used in the rain and can withstand water splashes. However, an IP rating of between 64-67 cannot be used as underwater lights. For underwater usage, go with IP68 and above. Read more about IP ratings here.

Bowfishing lights fitted with LEDs are expensive compared to the High-Pressure Sodium bulb and the halogen bulbs. However, they have the most extended lifespan and are energy efficient, meaning you will end up saving a lot in the long run.

How to Set Up

After purchasing a bowfishing lamp that closely fits your needs and description, then the next step is installation. At this stage, you should exercise caution to ensure you don’t damage the lights or hurt yourself.

The power needed is a significant value when assembling the lamps. Using Ohm’s formula, you can calculate how much energy your lighting system will consume.

According to Ohm’s Law Power(P) = Amps(I) * Volts(V)

To calculate how much current (Amperage/Amps) you will need to run your lights, you will divide the total Power by the Voltage.  After you’ve got that right, you can then proceed to the wiring phase. However, our advice is to consult an electrician to make sure your wiring is done right. It will cost you a little extra, but in the end, you will have a safely installed lighting system in your boat.

Maintenance and Operational Safety

Most bowfishing lights are built to last. However, that doesn’t mean that you should handle them roughly. Besides that, ensure to switch the power off during routine maintenance to avoid frying the parts or injuring yourself.
